I’m leaning towards door #3 only because it’s a few block from my apartment.

  • Kevin: so the yankees are deliriously happy because they lived up to expectations and 'didn't fail'
  • seems like an 'odd viewpoint'
  • championships seem like they're about 'accomplishing something'
  • not just 'avoiding failure'

Homicide on Lorimer St

ryanbrown:

anastasiafriscia:

neighborhoodr-williamsburg:

A gunman shot and killed a man on Lorimer Street between Ten Eyck and Maujer streets this afternoon, apparently after a car chase. A passerby who happened upon the aftermath of the slaying — which occurred at around 2:30 pm — had this to say: “There was a fight, then someone got shot. UPS man witnessed the incident and the UPS truck is part of the crime scene. Don’t know anything else, except saw cops try to revive the victim, who was bleeding from the back, pumped his chest, etc. as he was led into the ambulance.”

Another source had more information about the crime—which seems to have been classified as a homicide after the victim was pronounced dead on arrival at Woodhull Hospital according to reports coming across the police scanner:

“I live right across from the accident, but didn’t hear anything until the first responders came. Apparently one man (possibly older looking, mob-ish) was chasing another man both in their cars. There was a car crash and the man being chased jumped out and was shot by the chaser. The shot man then ran for cover in a UPS truck parked in front of a mailing place. Again, these details were all overheard, so I don’t know the truth to it all, but there’s a lot of activity here and I thought you would want to know.”

NYPD’s press office said it has not yet received any further information on the crime.

(via Gothamist)

I was at Manna at 2:30 and I didn’t hear anything.

Ok.

Firstly, I basically live (and work!) above Manna, and I heard nothing.

Secondly, what is Neighborhoodr actually supposed to be? This is a blatant rip-off of the Gothamist piece… paraphrased (barely), but basically the exact same copy. Happy the “Community Moderator” linked back to the original piece, but why not just block quote the whole thing and attribute it honestly?

Finally, that “mailing place” is called “Tiger Lilly” and the bro in there will hook you up with stamps any time. Super chill.

brown, a guy DIED.

Uhh...

Spurs guard Manu Ginobili has been placed on a precautionary regimen of rabies vaccinations after his now-famous run-in with a flying bat during a game Halloween night. The shots are purely preventative. Because the bat could not be found after the game for testing — team officials say it survived and flew away — doctors recommended that anyone who came in contact with it be vaccinated. Ginobili took four shots Monday in the hip and arm, and he is scheduled for four more such sessions over the next month. ‘It was pretty funny at the time,’ Ginobili said Monday, two days after his bat encounter. ‘Now it’s not. I got like a million shots for rabies.’

Juarez Town Councilmen Vote for the Mexican Army to leave Juarez

Town Councilmen decided on 26 October 2009 to disband soldiers serving in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, by 15 November 2009, despite Municipal President Jose Reyes Ferriz’s request that the military remain until March 2010. The decision was made due to the monetary cost and failure to curb rising homicide, kidnapping and extortion rates in the city.

Since around February there have been 8,000 rotating army forces trying to preserve order in Juarez. Obviously it hasn’t worked, and has even gotten worse since, but this shows the local distrust of the Army, which has largely proven it is just as corruptable as any other law enforcement entity in Mexico.

It’s not really up to the town council whether they stay or go, but what does it matter anyway? What’s going to happen next? Will the federal police stay? Is the Juarez police department suddenly going to be able to handle this themselves?

What force can stop murder, extortion and kidnapping in Juarez?
